With a family tradition of craftsmanship dating back to 1885 and Cicero Windom, Robert (Bob) Windom began his career in construction by apprenticing in various building trades under the watchful guidance of Robert Story, a prominent General Contractor from Lilburn, Georgia. But Bob’s career in construction included a short detour.

Taking what turned out to be only a temporary break from his career in construction, after finishing his construction apprenticeships, Bob was off to college where he earned a BA from Birmingham-Southern and M Div from Emory University.  He then spent five years following in the path of another family tradition by serving as a United Methodist Minister, on the UMC staff of Inner City Ministries. He then returned to the construction industry and Windom Construction.

When Bob started with Windom Construction, the company did a good deal of work rebuilding, renovating older homes and places of worship in Old Town Atlanta. This, in part, helped provide the basis for the company’s current special expertise in historic restoration, preservation and working with older homes.

Over time, Bob was able expand Windom Construction Company beyond Atlanta and expanding his expertise at the same time by supervising a number of interesting construction projects in other states including New York, Colorado, California and Hawaii. In fact, in Hawaii, he supervised construction on a home for Sylvester Stallone and built a church sanctuary. When licensed in Hawaii his company proceeded to renovate a 12 story hotel-condominium, a medical office and also built custom homes, etc.

While Bob and Windom Construction were working in Hawaii, Bob was a member of several building industry trade groups and he was on the board of directors of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii for two years. BIA of Hawaii is the state’s largest building industry trade group.

Since the mid 1990’s Bob limited Windom Construction’s service area to Atlanta and primarily to the area inside the I-285 Perimeter.  Almost all of the work Bob and Windom Construction does now is residential. A good part of this work is for homes that were built in the late 1800’s or first half of the 1900’s.

Bob has always had an appreciation for the past and thinks of preserving older structures as conserving resources, as well as building a bridge today to connect the past to the future while making sure we and our children have a bright future through responsible stewardship.  As a certified EarthCraft homebuilder and renovator and as an NAHB Certified Green Building Professional, Bob is able to create and transform homes in such a manner that they become not only comfortable, aesthetically pleasing spaces for living, but also contribute to a more energy efficient environment to enable a sustainable future.
